You may have seen them before, and thought they were just pretty novelties. But a rain chain isn’t just a decoration, it’s a very functional work of art!
Used as an alternative to downspouts, rain chains are attached via a hooking mechanism into the gutter’s low point, and directs rainwater from the gutters into decorative receptacles, drains or even rain barrels, providing beautiful gentle sounds along the way! Originally used in Japan, where they are called Kusari-Do, the tradition of hand-wrought, decorative cups hung on a chain brought an artisan’s touch to every day living, turning a rainy day into a beautiful sensory experience.
Available in copper, copper plate, steel, aluminum and other metals, a rain chain generally features a set number of decorative cups hung inches away from each other down a chain. The rain water fills each cup, overflowing into the next one, then the next, down to the ground or receptacle. Some modern models are chains without the cups, and each style has its own abilities regarding handling water flow. Chain styles tend to splash more, dispersing water to a wider area, but might not be as effective close to doors or windows. The bigger the cup, the more of a direct line to the ground will be achieved.
